INITIATIVES OF RUPANTARAN

In order to move towards its vision, Rupantaran has taken certain initiatives where it tries to balance the share of resources between various sections of society.

Udaan - The Rural Initiative

The initiative Udaan (means flight) started in Srikrishananagar village of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal. Udaan tries to create safe space for young people where they can talk about themselves and provide intensive facilitation to young people for shaping their personal vision and journeys as change makers so that they can engage themselves actively in the development of the area.

The sessions were conducted to shape a journey from self to society for the young people. The sessions were a combination of discussion, art, game, role play, finding pictures from magazines, film screening etc. We also stared a library to provide them a window to the world.

Educational Support Initiative

There are many meritorious children in the society who wants to continue their education but because of the poor economic condition, they tend to drop out of school. For these meritorious and economically underprivileged children, Rupantaran extends a hand of support to continue their education. This initiative is closely associated with the resource mobilization programme of Rupantaran as the educational resource collected is distributed to children of economically under privileged section.

Rupantaran has already supported twelve economically under privileged children from Behala Sarada Vidyapith (for Girls) and a slum in Taratalla (Calcutta Port Trust Colony).

Comics Adda

An initiative of Rupantaran Foundation to bring the issues affecting youth the most in public spaces using grassroots comics as an intervention tool.

In our society youths are expected to respect the elder people. If any youth talk against the functioning of existing system, his/ her voice / concern is often interpreted as a rebellion nature of the next generation. The focus is then shifts immediately from the issue to changing culture (rather degradation of culture) where today’s youth do not pay enough respect to elderly. Often this becomes a big problem for the youth to communicate the issues they concern about. So, in order overcome the problem an alternative media is required which could convey the message without offending others.

Comics are an interesting and creative means of expression. The most important aspect of it is that one can give strong message in a very light hearted and non – threatening manner. As grassroots comics is an easy and interesting tool to put forward one’s view, youth can use it to raise their voices on the issues they concern the most.
